Afraid of Hiking Heights

img_1398

I seem to be afraid of heights. Perhaps I haven't phrased that correctly. I am afraid of death seems more like it. Afraid of the sure death that is to come if you trip and slip off a cliff and crack your head open on the razor sharp rocks below. Yes. The perils of hiking have me a-feared. It's the second time I have walked out past the Battery to the start of one of the North Head hiking … [Read more...]

Motorcycle Dog

motorcycle dog in helmet

Today was a most gorgeous day for a walk. Or ride, if you're a motorcycle buff. Like Eli Patrick Benoit the pug. Here's Eli out enjoying a ride with his owner dressed in his finest. There was a larger than normal commotion outside Coffee and Company on Water Street, where the bikes are lined up, as everyone ogled the smartly dressed pug in his motorcycle cap and goggles doggles. … [Read more...]

Bill – My First Hurricane

snapshot from the NOAA satellite taken at 5:35 NL time, Aug 22, 09

Living in Toronto, one doesn't come across hurricanes. You may get thunderstorms galore, and the occasional tornado (sometimes deadly, my heart goes out to Durham, Ontario) but the ocean is way too far away for hurricanes. But here in my new home, I am living by the sea. And the sea brings different weather patterns than the cities in the centre of the universe - er- country. The news is all … [Read more...]

Running With the Artists

Bronze statue commemorating musicians is set on George Street, summer 2008.

One of the reasons I moved to Newfoundland is because I have a strong romantic notion based on an idealized version of Paris in the twenties - one where artists run amok from salon to salon, breaking boundaries, blowing minds and spreading ideas of freedom with wild and productive abandon. I even moved to Prague during the summer of '95 looking for it, as the rumour was at the time that it was the … [Read more...]

It Never Thunders in St. John’s

It never thunders in St. John's, Newfoundland. But it sure does in my hometown Toronto lately. I was on Facebook on August 8th, and tons of my Toronto friends were making comments on the lightning storm they were having. That is because it was a doozy. Check out this excellent video of the storm. It looks like a scene from a horror movie. The lightning video was shot on my dream camera - … [Read more...]

Serena Ryder at St. John’s Folk Festival

Here's a video of Serena Ryder closing at the 2009 St. John's Folk Festival. Held in Bannerman Park in the city, the festival is part of the "St. John's Time" series of summer fests, which starts with the George Street Festival (Blue Rodeo were special guests this year) and includes the St. John's Regatta - the longest running annual sporting event, and the St. John's Busker's Festival. Serena … [Read more...]

The Call of the Lake

My fave place

Some people are mountain people. Not I. I am a lake person. I love lakes. I love them especially if I can swim in them. Oceans are great too. The warm kind without jellyfish (meduses) especially. I am all about water, and the beautiful vistas they afford. This summer I had to go back home to my favourite spot in the world - the cottage on Georgian Bay. I just had to. Dad is legally blind now … [Read more...]

8 Ball Aitken Playing at the Ship

Bumped into 8 Ball Aitken at The Newfoundland Embassy in Canso, Nova Scotia. Actually, The Newfoundland Embassy is anywhere the Newfoundland band Shannygannock parks their trailer. This time it was parked at Stanfest, and I met up with singer Chris Andrews on Sunday afternoon, where he kindly invited me to a "cocktail reception" they were hosting. That's where I got to meet 8 Ball, who told me … [Read more...]

Lobster in a Tank

Lobster in a tank

Sobey's has a great aquarium stocked full of lobster making lobster portrait taking super easy. This was taken with my new Canon A2000 IS point and shoot. The camera boasts 6 times optical zoom, but yesterday I was enamoured with the macro settings. Lobster was a ridiculous $6.99 a pound this weekend at the store! Not sure if it's Newfoundland lobster or Nova Scotia lobster...most of the fish … [Read more...]

Lobster Season In Newfoundland

Lobster Season in Newfoundland

[Update: Lobster season in Newfoundland changes from year to year, and according to the region. It is set by the Department of Fisheries. Check out the DFO website to see the dates.] All of a sudden the restaurants on Water Street have been boasting lobster dinners, some as cheap as $22 bucks for a full meal. The local fish stores as well as the grocery stores are selling them live or cooked … [Read more...]
